Why is this bride insisting that a friend snap pics of her big day for free, instead of paying a professional photographer? 

There are so many expenses when it comes to planning a wedding that the pressure can become overwhelming. You'll need to hire a caterer, a florist, a DJ, and pay for the venue, at minimum. And of course you can't skimp out on your photographer, because this day is a big deal. All your loved ones are coming to celebrate you: don't you want to document one of the most special and important days of your life?

  • Most people do, naturally. But there are multiple ways to go about it. For example, you could encourage guests to take pictures on their own iPhones. You could leave a smattering of disposable cameras on tables and let guests have a blast snapping pics the old-fashioned way. Or you could go the traditional route, of hiring a professional photographer. And yes, it's going to cost you a pretty penny, but you'll get what you pay for. 

    Professional photographers don't just show up with a camera and start snapping pics at random.

    First of all, a lot of photographers work in pairs, with one shooting video and the other snapping photos, or sometimes using different types of cameras to achieve different outcomes throughout the event. 

    They also have expertise, knowing when the lighting will be best (and bringing their own lights along with them). They know how to pose everyone in the wedding party to get the most natural and happy looks. Then, after the wedding is over, they'll Photoshop the pics, making you and your spouse look your very best. Some even compile it into a printed book, or will send over hundreds of digital photos, so you can share your big day with the world. 

    Now, this person is an amateur photographer, and they seem to really enjoy it as a hobby. 

    But should they really be filling the role of wedding photographer for a friend?

  • This whole situation just ballooned out of control! 

    The bride has unintentionally proved her own point. If being a photographer is such an easy job, then it should be a snap to find a new one, because this person has clearly had enough. 

    Congrats to this person for having boundaries, too. It's totally uncool that the bride is so determined to have a free photographer that she'd ruin her wedding for a friend.

    2 hours would barely cover anything. It certainly wouldn't be enough for an entire wedding day. This is a really great idea, because it would highlight to the bride exactly how much she is demanding from her friend. 

  • Or give her an alternative contract where you do the whole wedding-all the hours, being in specific situations/places, and "x" hours of editing photos. Figure out what the cost would be for a stranger then subtract a "friends & family discount".
